Arts education is an important part of what we do around here. DH @damienjbyrne and I met when he was in a Punk band, in Adelaide, and we always loved seeing live music, so it was natural for us to continue going to gigs and performances with our oldest children. If we could, we would try to engage with the performers, in a break or at the end, and have a chat with them with our children. DD23 was always particularly interested in any instruments or singers, and as an outgoing child, she was keen to meet the performers and find out about them. One of the earliest experiences with this that I recall with her, was when she would have been about 5, and we were in Edinburgh, seeing a jazz band, was in the break, they kindly let her sit behind the drums and have a try, as well as showing her the double bass.
On the whole we always found musicians very generous with their time with our children. (Actually we've generally found people with a passion to be like this).

"The six lesson school teacher", a great article, covering what school actually teaches your child.
